Savant Syndrome... is a rare, but extraordinary, condition in which persons with serious mental disabilities, including autistic disorder, have some ‘island of genius’ which stands in marked, incongruous contrast to overall handicap.
As many as one in 10 persons with autistic disorder have such remarkable abilities in varying degrees, although savant syndrome occurs in other developmental disabilities or in other types of central nervous system injury or disease as well. Whatever the particular savant skill, it is always linked to massive memory.
There are as many classes of savant skills, as there are areas of the brain designated to specific functions.
This is an exceedingly rare phenomena, although there are many well documented cases, and recently the Academy Award winning movie Rain Man has led to the term savant being much more widely known. Savant syndrome is perhaps one of the most fascinating phenomena in the study of human cognitive psychology. It is often claimed that, because of the extraordinary abilities involved, we will never truly understand human memory-cognition until we understand the savant.
LINKING SAVANT SYNDROME TO CONSCIOUSNESS SURVIVAL:
There is a current line of thought linking Savantism to the theory of extra-cerebral memory, i.e., that human memory is actually a 'field phenomenon' located outside the brain--- with the brain itself functioning as a 'reduction-valve' or 'filter' rather than as a source of consciousness. Damage to a specific area of the cortex could then result in a localized break in the brain's filter wall, a "flood-influx" of specialized information, the type depending on the anatomical designation of the damaged area.
In this way, Savantism could be seen as a "crack" in the brain's cerebral armor, (our primary safeguard against the overpowering "pressure" of the vast information present within the surrounding Zero Point Field).
What follows, is a brief video introduction to the phenomenon:
